Radar Detectors: How Effective Are They?
If you are thinking about purchasing a radar detector, then you join the multitude of people who are currently thinking about the same thing you are. You should understand, however, that radar detectors are not foolproof, and do not guarantee absolute protection against the policeman waiting at the side of the road to catch speeding vehicles unawares. While a radar detector will detect the danger most of the time, giving you time to slow down and pass the policeman by safely, there are times when the detector may fail to give you warning.
Many people make the mistaken assumption that, once they have a radar detector installed in their vehicle, their safety in terms of being caught speeding is guaranteed. They believe that they can speed without any possibility of being caught. The most major problem with that is that it is not acceptable for people to speed on purpose. If you are simply driving slightly over the speed limit, then you deserve to receive a warning in order to avoid a hefty fine. If you plan to use this tool for irresponsible speeding, then you are likely to land in a large amount of trouble eventually.
You should also keep in mind the warning time that your radar detector provides. Some radar detectors - even though they do warn you when you are speeding and coming into range of a speed gun - may not give you adequate time to slow down to an acceptable speed. You must not simply jam on your brakes once you receive a warning, as this will likely cause an accident as the car traveling behind you will not have enough time to react and brake as well. You need to make a controlled deceleration instead, and you may not have enough time to do so.
In addition, you must realize that radar detectors can and do fail. People who invested hundreds of dollars in the best radar detectors have still found themselves being issued tickets for speeding. If you do not purchase the right radar detector or do not understand how to use it correctly, then you have wasted the money you spent buying it. In certain areas, police officers still use radar detection to catch speeding vehicles, while in others they use laser detection, also known by the acronym LIDA. If you have installed the appropriate detection tool in your vehicle, however, you will breeze past the officer, unaware of his presence.
When you select the radar detector that you wish to purchase, you must ensure that it is suitable for use with the type of detection being used in your local area. You should also attempt to protect your car as much as possible, and you may wish to consider buying a those products that will prevent laser light from being reflected, and thus reduce the chance that you will be caught by a speed gun. Finally, it is important for you to purchase a quality product, as this will afford much better protection; making the right choice when it comes to radar detectors is extremely important.
